CROWNS AND BRIDGES
A crown is the same service as a ‘cap’. A bridge is a series of these caps joined together to replace 1 or more missing teeth. When a tooth is either weak, out of position or is unattractive, a crown can help. The bad natural tooth is shaped and adjusted to allow for the crown to fit over and around the tooth and become cemented into place. Crowns can be made in almost any shape and shade to give superior esthetics. A bridge is the permanent way to replace a missing tooth compared to a removable partial denture that comes in and out. Bridges are a standard way to give a patient natural comfortable healthy chewing. A bridge does require more diligent home care to floss under and around at the gumline. And without an implant, the bone where the missing tooth is replaced by the bridge, is still susceptible to bone loss over time. All in all, a non removable bridge is one of the best options to keep your mouth healthy.
A porcelain veneer is a thin custom fitted shell that is cemented over a poorly looking or positioned tooth to improve the smile and health of the mouth. Closing gaps, replacing chipped worn down unattractive teeth with a bright white dynamite smile are some of the reasons veneers are performed.
You can think of porcelain veneers as a permanent way to whiten and brighten teeth!
Dentures are an artificial way to replace missing teeth. They can be supported by dental implants to help prevent bone loss and give a patient a way to chew and bite. Standard dentures rest on top of the gums and rely on suction to stay in place. Without teeth or implants the underlying bone will shrink and atrophy over time. Dentures will lose their ‘grip’ over time due to this bone loss and facial changes. Dentures are never easy to get used to but given the alternatives are certainly needed for patients that are not candidates for dental implants. One recent development in dentures is our use of bleached white shades for denture teeth.
SEMI-PRECISION PARTIAL DENTURES
The one type of partial denture that is the most comfortable and best looking partial without unsightly hooks or clasps is the semi-precision partial. This is by far the best alternative to replace teeth when dental implants are not possible. Standard partials have a hook or clasp that grab onto a tooth for support. Over time these hooks can loosen the tooth as the bone without teeth or implants shrinks and atrophies. Rocking, bulkiness, food traps and pain are common complaints about standard partials. Semi-precision partials have attachments that lock the partial into place with the crowns(caps) that are placed on the teeth next to the partial. Though not always possible in every case, precision partials are THE most comfortable, secure partial available.
- Semi-precision partials have no unattractive hooks or clasps
- Male/female connector attachment snap and holds the partial into place
- Semi-precision partials have the most gentle forces on the anchor teeth
PREVENTION AND RESTORATIONS
Preventive dentistry is intended to prevent dental problems before they start or get worse. In 1988, we were one on the first dental offices in Michigan to have an Intra-Oral camera system. Seeing problems when they are small and easily managed is important; our camera system allows for us to see extremely well. Preventing decay from starting and getting worse is important to our patients. Our patients can see what is going on in their mouths and we offer many options to help keep their oral health in the best shape possible. We use white composite filling materials to make the fillings look natural instead of using the old fashioned, dark, metal silver fillings. When a tooth becomes weaker with a larger filling or excessive force, porcelain or gold fillings are best to prevent further wear and tear on the remaining tooth. Remember, decay never gets smaller or less involved or costs less over time. Preventing problems is affordable, neglecting them is not.
- Intra-oral camera system allows us to see problems when they are smaller
- Composite white fillings looks better and bonds teeth better than metallic silver fillings
- We offer choices to help keep our patients in the best shape possible
Invisalign is the easiest way to straighter healthier teeth without metal braces or wires. Using advanced software with CAD/CAM processing, clear medical grade polymer aligners(trays) are made to gently move the teeth into the desired position. Though not possible in every condition of crowded or crooked teeth, Invisalign is great for many of our patients. Typically the patient must have their 12 year molars and be diligent enough to wear the clear aligners each and every day for at least 18 hours to work efficiently. These aligners are worn for 2 weeks at a time until going to the next aligner. A typical case can have from 7 to 30 aligners and take from 3-10 months. For more information about how Invisalign can help you, follow the link to www.Invisalign.com

PERIODONTAL GUM THERAPY
Gum or periodontal disease is a bacterial infection of the tissues around the teeth. Once under the gums 3,4 or 5 millimeters the bacteria can travel into the blood stream and affect other parts of the body weakening the immune system. Pyorrhea or gum disease is the number 1 reason for tooth loss in America today. The first sign of gum disease is NOT pain, it is swelling and bleeding. Gingivitis is the swelling of the gums when they become red, puffy and they bleed. This is the stage of gum disease that is the easiest to treat BEFORE permanent bone infection and atrophy occurs. We offer a Soft Tissue Management program featuring a Rota-Dent plaque removing toothbrush. Since 2001 we have found our S.T.M. program has helped our patients keep their teeth and require less gum surgeries! We use a round ruler to measure the gums to see how healthy they are and if there are any sign of bleeding. Remember the best way to fight gum disease is with regular professional cleanings 2, 3 or even 4 times per year.
- Gum disease is silent in nature with little pain just bleeding and swelling
- Pyorrhea is the number one reason for tooth loss
- Infections in the mouth and gums spread through the body and to the heart
- Our S.T.M. rotadent program is painless and is non-surgical
- Professional cleanings 2,3 or 4 times per year is a great way to stay healthy
A tooth that becomes deeply decayed can have the bacteria infect the tooth nerve. Typically the only way to save an infected tooth nerve is with a root canal. When a tooth nerve goes bad it is sensitive to chewing, hot and even cold. Swelling or pressure is common. We can use local anesthetic or even IV Sleep Sedation to offer completely painless root canals. Once numb the infected tooth is cleaned out and medicated to reduce the infection and swelling. Then a sealer is used to seal, fill and protect the tooth root from further infection. A crown (cap) is often done after a root canal to prevent the tooth from breaking down or cracking. Root canals are very successful and truly pain free these days.
- Root canals are a type of dental treatment to fix an infected tooth.
- Bacteria in the mouth causes tooth decay which if untreated can lead to a root canal
- New techniques can make having a root canal painless
- Scared, phobic patients can have IV Sleep sedation taking the worry out of root canals
ORAL SURGERY SERVICES
Oral surgery consists of many in-office surgeries from third molar extractions to other services such as tori (bumps of bone on the tongue side of the lower jaw) removal, bone recontouring and biopsies. Most people realize when the wisdom teeth (3rd molars) become tender and painful that they need to be removed. However, preventing pain and infection is possible when teenagers and young adults are pre-screened for 3rd molar complications before they happen. The typical age for wisdom tooth removal is 16-22 depending on the size, location and position of the teeth. Many times a blocked out 3rd molar can damage a perfectly good 2nd molar due to the blocked or tipped impacted molar. Once again, early treatment especially with IV Sleep Sedation can truly be a painless procedure.
- Oral surgery is done in-office without having to travel to another location
- Third molar surgery is routinely done including completely bone covered impactions
- We are affordably located in Westland especially since we do not charge specialist fees
- IV Sedation makes any surgeries a lot easier, comfortable and completely pain free
PERIODONTAL PLASTIC SURGERY
Periodontal plastic surgery consists of procedures to improve the appearance of the gum tissue. Using advanced surgical techniques and high powered magnification, Dr. Bruce Smoler can create magic with these techniques to gives patients a remarkable smile. Often, a patient comes in for a second opinion on a cosmetic procedure that had less than expected results from another office. In these types of patients the actual porcelain work may be fine, but the gum tissue makes the end result look less than desirable. So the missing link to the problem is the lack of treating or improving the gum line BEFORE any smile makeovers are done. Ideally, it is best to have the best looking gum tissue to help ensure the best esthetic result. Come see why patients rave about the care and commitment Dr. Bruce Smoler brings to every case, “Smile with Confidence.”
- Unattractive gum lines lead to less than desirable cosmetic results
- Strong healthy gums without recession lead to the most predictable results
- Periodontal Plastic Surgery is a must for gummy short looking teeth
- Treatment is not very invasive so the post-op swelling or discomfort is minimal
- Dr. Bruce Smoler has over 20 yrs experience with these procedures
